Often times when you are feeling happy and enjoying life it can be pretty easy to stay on your wellness A-game. Working out is fun and choosing nourishing foods is a breeze.
But then when everything feels like it's crumbling beneath you, your healthy eating habits take a vacation and the thought of working out feels like such a struggle.
Right when we need to step up and support ourselves the most, we decide to give our body foods that don't make us feel great and allow our self-care to see itself out of the front door. What is with that?!
Perhaps it's all of the fantastic excuses our internal sassy bullies give us, "You've worked so hard lately and things have been really tough on you. You really just need to relax. You need to check out for a moment. Give your mind a rest. Why don't you go give yourself some ice cream to cheer yourself up? And you know what? Why don't you just skip the Pilates class and stay on the couch watching re-runs of Friends - it will make you feel so much better."
How often have we done this to make ourselves feel better only to feel even crummier about ourselves afterwards? Note to self, eating my emotions and avoiding life by watching shows doesn't make me feel better.
So why the heck do we do it?
Well it's pretty simple. Whenever we begin to sabotage our nourishing ways of being it's because we are crying out for one simple thing:
All we want is to experience more pleasure.
When you feel yourself wanting to eat when you're not hungry, skip your exercise class or feel like you need a drink - all you really want is to experience more pleasure. So pleasure is what you must give yourself. Pleasure shouldn't be considered a special treat or reward, pleasure should be considered a basic human need and a vital piece of your self-care regimen.
Today we are going to share with you our number one way to stay on track during the tough times and how to get yourself out of blues-ville even faster!
Implement A Joy List:
- Write down 25 activities that bring you joy that don't involve food. Make sure you have several options that cost no money and only take a few minutes. Some examples from our lists are yoga (in a class or at home), laying in a star fish pose under a tree, going for a walk, having a cup of tea outside, meditating, taking an aromatherapy bath, journaling, jumping in the ocean, reading in bed - just to name a few.
- Place your Joy List on your refrigerator. Keep the list where you can see it constantly. We encourage the refrigerator, because the kitchen will likely be your first stop to soothe yourself.
- When you're feeling stressed, blue or bored do an activity from the list. Before grabbing something to eat (when you know you're not hungry) or making the choice to skip your exercise class, do an activity from your joy list. After you do your activity, check in with yourself. Do you still want to grab something to eat even though you're not hungry? Are you feeling more inspired to move your body at your exercise class?
Simple strategies like this Joy List make living a life you love possible every single day - no matter what life throws your way. This is just one of the many strategies we share in our Eat For Love Course - in it we give women the tools to fall in love with themselves by healing their relationship with food and as a result, they empower their relationships with themselves and others.
