We talk a lot about giving yourself unconditional permission to eat. For some that sounds terrifying, like an opportunity for out of control eating, for others it sounds like having a cheat day every day. But it’s not either of those things. So what it is it?
We’ll start with what it’s not so you get a vivid picture of what we’re talking about.
It’s not eating until your stomach hurts.
It’s not eating foods that make you bloated or gives you a headache.
It’s not having wine and chocolate every night.
It’s not choosing to eat fast food “just because you can”.
It’s not eating sugar and then making yourself feel guilty about it.
It’s not a reward for being good.
It’s not choosing to eat foods to say screw you to someone who said you shouldn’t.
What it is:
It’s eating what you want but stopping when you’re full.
It’s eating when you’re hungry and not when you’ve had a crummy day.
It’s eating foods that make your body feel good because that’s all you crave.
It’s letting every meal be a foodgasm and truly enjoying your food instead of checking out.
It’s giving the freedom to choose what you want in the moment without thinking twice.
It’s knowing the difference between needing food, pleasure or sleep to satisfy your cravings.
It’s being able to have one French fry without worrying about eating them all.
So how do you get from what it’s not to what it is?
You have to let yourself be completely open and curious about the way you eat without judging yourself. It’s learning how you use food to make yourself happy, to de-stress, or to stay awake without being mad at yourself and finding other ways to cope.
Giving ourselves unconditional permission to eat is a mindset shift that gives us REAL freedom to choose. Not choosing because we think we have to or should, or choosing because we’re afraid what others will think.
It’s getting really connected to yourself, bringing awareness to your eating habits, and being present when you eat. Leaving you feeling free to choose without worrying and craving foods that make you feel good.
It can be a process to move past all of the thoughts and beliefs that you have about food and yourself, but what it brings in the end is more than just about food. It becomes time, mental energy, productivity, happiness, confidence and most of all it becomes freedom to trust yourself in all areas of your life.
