How many times have you experienced this internal dialogue:
Wow, those [insert delicious food here] look really amazing! I really want one of those!
But I shouldn’t. . .
But it looks so good. . .
Screw it!!! . . . just one. . ..
OMG this is heaven!!!
God I shouldn’t have done that, but it was so incredible, I mean, I’ve never tasted something so good!
You know what?!? I mean I already screwed it up today, I may as well just enjoy it and have another one. Yep, I’m having another one.
Wow, that second one was just as good as the first one, okay, I can’t resist I’m going to have one more!
Wow, that was good. . . but ugh, I totally just had three [insert delicious food here]. That was so bad. I shouldn’t have done it.
Why don’t I have self-control.
This is why you have so many problems. You have no willpower. You just can’t keep it together, ever!
Ugh, worst decision ever, I feel so sick, ugh, I feel awful. My stomach doesn’t feel so good.
That, my dear, is FOOD GUILT!!!!
Maybe that wasn’t your exact internal dialogue, but I’m sure at some time or another you’ve experienced food guilt. While it doesn’t seem inherently all that bad. Food guilt can actually have a pretty serious impact on our lives.
First of all it keeps you from enjoying food, but it can also make you unhappy, it can cause you to binge eat out of rebellion, and it can make you physically ill.
Yes, physically ill.
The guilt and stress of eating “forbidden” or “bad for you” foods can make you physically sick (think stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, etc.) because we are feeling bad about it. Not because of the food itself.
So what do you do next? It’s time to heal your relationship with food.
Recently, Marisa was interviewed by Confidence Coach Trish Blackwell about eating without guilt and she gives some really powerful ways to heal your relationship with food. Get started today and listen to the interview here.
