Our bodies are extraordinary. They communicate exactly what we need, the only problem is that most of us ignore them or interpret the messages improperly.
The good thing is, that by using simple awareness and asking questions you can actually begin to understand exactly what you need.
Let's think about it, here are a few signals that are easy to ignore:
Our body communicates how much water it needs, when we should eat, and when we need rest. The only problem is that we're usually too busy to even pay attention or we use stimulants like caffeine that hide our thirst, hunger, and sleepiness.
What are the consequences when we ignore these cues?
1. When we ignore thirst we can experience dehydration, fatigue, headaches, slowed digestion, feel like we need to eat, even though we're just thirsty and many other things like kidney issues.
2. When we ignore our hunger, we slow our metabolism, we get so hungry that we binge, overeat, or crave non-nourishing foods.
3. Ignoring sleepiness is extremely common these days. If you need coffee to stay awake then you're ignoring the cue! The answer isn't to drink more coffee it's to get more sleep at night. Being in go go go mode for an extended period of time can cause adrenal fatigue, lack of mental clarity, sugar and carbohydrate cravings, increased levels of stress, extreme emotions and other inflammatory problems in the body.
Now here's the thing, diets/restriction or trying to stick to a plan doesn't allow us to fully listen to our bodies. We lose our ability to trust our bodies or tune into when we rely on reading about it rather than feeling how it works in our own bodies. By the time we finally tap in we've usually gained weight, binged, or sick!
The best way to lose weight, to have more energy, and to feel your best is to tune into your own body. That's the key behind intuitive eating.
Ask yourself today, what message is your body telling you?
