So today, I want to talk about all of the different reasons why we eat when we're not hungry! Eating when we're not hungry once in a while, isn't so bad, but when it becomes something we're doing every day or every week, it can add up!
Even people who eat really nourishing foods can over eat and gain weight. So it's important to talk about our mindset and emotions when it comes to food. Since you might be eating perfectly and yet still over eating! Next week I'll talk about what happens if we are not eating ENOUGH.
Biologically we experience physiological hunger to signal that we need food to give us energy because our energy stores have exhausted. We should always eat when we're physiologically hungry.
There are also other types of hunger, emotional and taste hunger. Today I'm going to talk about emotional hunger.
Emotional hunger is the desire to eat when you're not hungry because you're experiencing any type of emotion. Anxiety, sadness, disappointment, anger, boredom, loneliness, stress, etc. Even excitement can make you want to eat if you're an emotional eater!
Food can be a tool to avoid emotions in two ways: The first is to check out from or numb emotions by eating. The second is to use eating has a form of control and to focus on eating perfectly rather than focusing on your emotions.
Here are 5 other reasons we eat when we're not hungry:
You're a People Pleaser eater, which means you can never turn down food, a meal, an offering, you're going to take it if you're hungry or not. You eat on other peoples schedules and eat what other people want rather than what you want.
You're a Guilty Eater, which means you feel so guilty about eating certain foods that you're so focused on feeling guilty you're eating something you can't stop. Once it reaches a certain amount you're eating to check out from feeling guilty or say screw it I already failed so I'm just going to eat a lot of this.
You're a Rebellious eater, which means you eat something just because someone tells you that you shouldn't! You're more likely to eat foods you don't want and in higher qualities just because someone tells you not to!
You're a perfectionist eater, so you eat really healthy all of the time and often times bland food, so when a tasty food comes a long you're more likely to over indulge. Once you "cheat", you say screw it and go in full force!
You're a super hero eater, so you're always on the go. You're always running from one place to the next, eating in the car, in front of your computer. You're always over eating, the reason you know you're done is because the whole container is gone!
You might be a few of these! I know I was! The good news is that you can shift all of this by shifting the way you think about food! That's exactly why I created the Mind Body Spirit Method!
Can't wait to support you on this journey any way I can! xoxo
