Can You Do A Cleanse And Be An Intuitive Eater?
This answer is yes! It's called body-food choice congruence. Our body food choice congruence is choosing foods that feel good and energize your body. This is the ultimate goal of intuitive eating.
So if you feel like your body is craving a cleanse, likely your body might be calling for lighter foods, fresh foods, more vegetables, or more fruit. Or maybe less meat and more nuts or seeds.
Now I'm not referring to going on a "diet" or the"Whole 30" in hopes to lose weight. It's actually tapping into what your body is really calling for in this very moment.
It's not setting an extended period of time where you "can't" have certain foods, it's about honoring what your body is asking for right now at this moment. Each day asking yourself, if your body is still desiring cleansing foods.
I want to share with you what I discovered about cleansing, this spring:
In late February, I could feel my body desiring a cleanse. I was feeling a little lower energy, I was feeling like the foods I was eating weren't agreeing with me, and like I wasn't digesting meat as well as I could.
I could feel myself craving different types of vegetables than I had been eating and wanting more fruit and lighter foods. Intuitively, I was sensing that the preservatives in food, alcohol, and grains weren't making me feel great.
So on March 1st, I decided I would begin cooking more and avoid those foods to honor my body. Within a week I noticed feeling absolutely amazing. So much more energy, my stomach felt less bloated, and my mind felt clearer. I even felt happier. I started exercising more! It was awesome.
The next week, it was almost like I had too much energy. I was having a hard time sleeping. 6 hours and boom I was awake! Even after 3 days went by, I still had energy! Yay!
5 days went by of not sleeping well and I started to feel it. I was getting tired. Even a little cranky. I was craving carbs, I wanted to go out to cocktails with my friends, I even wanted attention from those guys I'm not really interested in. Ugh!
Two and half weeks in, I gave in! I had a cocktail with some friends, I ate french fries when out for breakfast and not so amazing ketchup. Even though, I know how much better I feel, how much clearer my brain is, and how much my body was loving it.
Not getting enough sleep had sabotaged my ability to keep it going! But, it was such an incredible awareness for me! I realized how important sleep is for me and how much it plays a role in me taking care of my body and my emotions.
Thankfully for intuitive eating, there wasn't any guilt about giving in, so I started looking at what I could tweak that would help me feel a little more grounded and I could sleep more.
I needed a little more balance of what I was eating, I needed a little more protein and healthy fats. As soon as I incorporated these little changes, I was back on track in a day or two, sleeping more and no longer having those cravings for carbs or a drink!
So why is this important?
1. You can learn so much by tuning into what your body wants.
2. It could take some tweaking to get it right and it might change.
3. Sleep is more important than you think and it could be making you stressed, anxious, and craving foods that don't make you feel great.
4. If you don't feel guilty about giving in, you can just jump right back into to nourishing foods instead of binge eating.
