I hope you're not sitting there today full of regret because you've over eaten Halloween candy. If you are, don't be hard on yourself, you're not alone. I was once there. Halloween, Easter, Christmas, any holiday I would eat candy until I was sick or almost sick. I would eat every last bit of candy I collected, finish the entire Easter basket and then feel horribly guilty about it.
The amazing thing is that there is another way to live besides being tempted by candy when it's around. I don't even know how many years it's been since I became an Intuitive Eater and I also can't remember the last time I had candy on Halloween or Easter.
Even at my old office Halloween party I passed on the candy bowl after becoming an intuitive eater. I now leave my Easter candy at my parents house because I don't want it, not out of force.
You might be wondering how that's possible?? There are two major differences between "being healthy" and being an intuitive eater that make things easier.
1. It's not about willpower, it's about listening to what your body wants.
So, if Halloween falls on a day that I'm craving sweets then I would have candy, but that hasn't happened yet. Most of my sweet cravings disappeared after I became an Intuitive Eater.
2. The majority of the time you eat what feels good or nourishing for your body and a little might be just enough.
So that means, you'll have 1 or 2 pieces instead of 10. When we have rules about eating, or feel guilty about eating certain foods, 1-2 isn't enough because your guilt kicks in... "Oh well, I"ve already had two, may as well keep going" ... or ... "ugh what is wrong with me, I can't just go a day without having candy or have candy sitting in front of me and not eat it".... and then you get upset, emotional, and all you want is the candy to feel better.
It's a vicious cycle! So if you're hung over from Halloween candy, bring some self-compassion, know that it's okay, and today is a new day. Your body now wants something else.... even if your mind or the guilt is making you want more candy...
