Our bodies are perfectly designed to tell us what they need. The only problem is that we aren't listening. Today's Today's episode of Weekly Wisdom is about what your body might be telling you that you're not seeing and how to tune in! (See below the video if you'd rather read today's episode!) Don't forget to check below for upcoming events, extra resources and opportunities for you!
Today I'm going to talk about how you might be ignoring your body, what the consequences are of not tuning in, and what steps you can take to listen more carefully and to prevent yourself from having big problems!
Now look, I know you’re super heroes out there. It seems these days that is the goal, how productive can we be, how much can we get done, constantly moving past our limits to expand how much can we achieve.
That’s all great, but when you look at the nation’s health we also see that more and more people have heart attacks, cancer, weight gain, adrenal fatigue, anxiety, and depression. We’re not the epitome of health over here.
But the amazing thing is that our bodies are perfectly designed to tell us what we need. They send us messages that indicate something is off balance, something needs to be adjusted in our habits, lifestyle or lives. The only problem is, we’ve become too busy to notice.
We’ve got so much information popping up in our face we don’t even trust what our body is telling us anymore. And when we do notice push past it, we ignore the signs, and we keep moving.
The two areas that I’m going to talk about today where you might experience an immediate impact when you’re ignoring your body cues are: eating habits and immunity. So if you’re eating habits feel out of control, you’re getting sick all of the time or when you do get sick you’re sick for weeks, you might want to listen carefully!
Okay, let’s talk about eating, how ignoring and misinterpreting our body’s messages actually sabotage our eating habits! Hunger – this is the first cue we often ignore. We’ve been taught if you eat less you lose weight, but hunger is our sign we’ve used up our energy sources.
Unfortunately, our bodies don’t know you’ll get to eating when you have a chance so they when we’ve depleted our energy sources and don’t eat our metabolism slows down, our body goes into starvation mode and begins to eagerly await eating again. By the time you eat not only is your metabolism on slow you’re ravenous and somehow you can’t seem to get enough food on your fork at one time.
Next thing you know you’re finished with your meal and you’re still hungry. So now you’ve over eaten, you’ve eaten really fast (which is not good for your digestive system) and all with a slowed metabolism.
Okay second example, sugar cravings… You can’t keep your mind off sugar… it’s the end of the day, you’re tired, and all you really want is chocolate or cookies! You’re not even hungry… You dive in to the bag of cookies. You’ve already missed the cue. You’re tired. Your body really wants rest and relaxation. It’s time to sleep, you’re not hungry!
The same scenario may play out mid-afternoon, your blood sugar dropped because you ate too much for lunch, instead of diving into the candy jar you need a quick break or a walk.
Alright, now let’s talk about immunity. You feel a scratchy throat coming on or for some reason you feel extra exhausted. Instead of relaxing you push through. Next thing you know you’ve got a full blown cold, or worse you’re sick for a week. Your body warned you it needed recuperation time. It needed rest.
As soon as those early signs of sickness come on or that extreme exhaustion, that’s you’re cue to rest. I promise taking a sick day to sleep is way better than taking 5 sick days off.
Okay so here are my tips to you to listen to your body:
Tips #1: Slow down! I know that’s hard to hear, but there’s no way you can pick up on your body cues if you’re in fight or flight mode.
Tip #2: Check in with yourself. Literally, ask yourself, what does my body need? It’s not usually what you think it is. We go through our days tired, overworked, thinking we need more coffee. That’s our initial surface level reaction, not what our body really wants.
Tip #3: Acknowledge what your body needs and take a break, rest, relax, breathe, eat, you get the picture!
So I’ll leave you off today with a question to ask yourself, what does my body need right now and how can I honor what it needs?
I hope you enjoyed today’s episode! If you know anyone who might benefit from today’s video, please pass it along.
