We've all had them. Those days when we say "It's just one of those days". It started when you were rushing around to be on time and you spilled coffee on your lap on the way to work and then the following happened:
You were late.
Everyone in your office seemed cranky.
They didn't have what you wanted at lunch.
That person didn't turn that report into you on time.
You didn't make your gym class.
Nothing is turning out the way you wanted it to.
All the while you're having a conversation with yourself about how you're a disaster . . . . . . . you can't seem to get anything right . . .
. . . why doesn't anything work out the way you want it to . . .
OR you start blaming:
. . . why can't everyone be happy . . .
. . . what's wrong with people . . .
. . . it's all their fault. . .
The amazing thing is that you never have to have one of those days again! It doesn't have to be that way. Here are 5 steps to shifting any day immediately:
1. Breathe: Have you ever noticed that you hold your breath when you're nervous, anxious, upset, stressed or trying to keep things under control? It's common to stop breathing, it's a habit we picked up to hold in our emotions, to keep things under control and feel safe. The only problem is that it keeps us in "fight or flight mode" slowly the stress hormones in our body build up. The act of taking big, deep, fluid breaths will help you relax, release any tension, and improve your mood. Our recommendation: sit down, take 20 deep, fluid breaths so the air goes all the way into your deep belly.
2. Laugh at yourself: Have some self-compassion. We are all crazy human beings! We all have all kinds of moments that are strange, silly, and out of character for us. Instead of giving yourself a hard time, laugh at yourself! This not only changes your mood but it stops those negative thoughts right in their tracks.
3. Focus on being present. Be responsible for your mood. Often times we think we're being normal after an upset or stressful situation, but we really aren't. We're walking around thinking, over analyzing things, not paying attention. Instead of allowing yourself to continue thinking about what just happened. Focus on being in the moment. Let yourself pay attention to what's happening right in front of you. Notice the air, temperature, the smell, the scenery, and the people right in front of you.
4. Write it all out. If you are still having a hard time focusing, let yourself write all of the emotion out on paper. Just write and write and write, until there's nothing left. All of your emotions, thoughts, feelings, etc. Allow yourself to release it.
5. Practice gratitude. Write down or think about 5 things you're really grateful for immediately and throughout the day! It can be hard at first, but it will become easier and easier as the day goes on!
We hope you have an incredible day, beautiful! Remember you're exactly who you should be and you're whole, complete, and perfect just the way you are.
Much love,
Hannah & Marisa
