Thanksgiving is one day away, which is why I'm posting this today! So you can be sure to reference it on Thursday! Here are a few tips to enjoy Thanksgiving without overdoing it!
1. Practice mindfulness - eat slowly and taste every bite. Savor each bite by closing your eyes momentarily (believe me it works, you'll be satisfied much more quickly). Chew each bite extra well to help your digestion. Do your best to notice when you're full and stop eating.
2. Don't wait to eat all day. If you want to overeat, waiting to eat is a sure way to do it. Waiting to eat all day does two things that you don't really want to happen. First it slows your metabolism and digestion down since it needs to conserve energy. Second when you're low on energy your body goes into survival mode, by the time you get to dinner you're starving and unable to stop inhaling your meal.
3. Take a little bit of everything that looks good to you. Try each little bit, only eat what you enjoy and only go back for seconds for the things you really love. Don't force yourself to eat foods that don't taste good to you! If someone offers you something you don't want, you can politely say "I'm not ready for that yet or I'm not really feeling like having that today".
4. Watch out for these mind traps:
I won't have this food for another year. How does this get you in trouble? Things taste extra good, you eat them when you're not hungry or even if you don't really like it because you feel like you won't have an opportunity to have them again for a whole year.
I'm going to be eating bad, so screw it I may as well be really bad. How does this get you in trouble? Instead of just eating a slice of pumpkin pie you have 5. Instead of listening to your body and knowing it wants one roll you have 3.
I'll start my diet tomorrow. How does this get you in trouble? Just like number 2. You're giving yourself permission to go crazy instead of listening to your body. Instead of focusing on "being bad" focus on what your body wants, what your taste buds want and eat it mindfully!
Have an amazing Thanksgiving! May your day be full of gratitude! <3
