The holidays are rapidly approaching. . . . A time for fun and holiday cheer and grocery stores, office lunch rooms, and parties overflowing with copious amounts of holiday treats and sweets.
Or maybe that’s what it seems like because you can’t seem to keep your cool in the presence of those beautifully decorated, shiny wrapped, cute pinterest-worthy delectables.
Ugh!!! You might find yourself praying on your lucky stars or declaring that this year is the year you don’t gain 10 lbs. over the holidays or overindulge to the point of sickness!
Okay, I hope you’ve had a few laughs of recognition!
I want to get you prepared for the holiday season, so this year isn’t like the last, or at least a start in the right direction!
Wouldn’t it be great to be able to enjoy a sweet treat, without going crazy?!
I think so!
So let’s begin with why it’s so hard to stick with it during the holidays, besides the fact that cookies and candy are all around us and a few tips to overcome those challenges.:
Holidays are a special time of year i.e. there are all kinds of treats we only have once a year! So it feels and seems impossible to pass up something we won’t have until next year! TIP: If you don’t LOVE it don’t eat it. Give yourself permission to eat the treats that are special to you rather than the ones that you might find at a holiday potluck or the grocery store. Make sure it tastes the way you imagined. Don’t feel bad about putting it down or not finishing it!
You’re probably going to have one, that doesn’t mean you have to have them all. We call it black and white thinking. If you have one, you think you’ve screwed everything up and you may as well go crazy. Having one cookie or one not so great meal isn’t going to kill you. TIP: Think in the gray. If you have a lot of sweets or treats at one meal, eat something nourishing the next!
You try to save your calories until the end of the day. It’s not uncommon to think you’re doing yourself a favor by not eating all day before you head to a potluck. You’re actually doing the exact opposite! Not eating all day not only slows your metabolism down, it makes you more sensitive to sugar, and you’re more likely to eat more. When we haven’t eaten all day, we go into survival mode and we can’t stop eating and we can’t be satisfied. TIP: Eat nourishing foods throughout the day and don’t show up to the party starving.
You’ve got this! This holiday season won’t be the same!
