A while back a dear client of ours was suffering from uncontrollable binge eating. She was absolutely ravenous! During the days she hardly ate - in fact, she kept a photo of herself in a bikini from 10 years ago in the kitchen pantry to continuously remind herself of her goal weight before eating. It wasn't until she started to binge drink, that the binge eating really surfaced.
The drinking and eating went hand in hand. When she came home intoxicated enough, she would finally allow herself the freedom to eat exactly what and how much she wanted. With the idea that this would be her last and final meal (AKA "the last supper syndrome") she couldn't stop until she ate everything in site and felt sick!
This cycle lasted for over a decade. Her thoughts sounded like, "I hate my body," "No guy is ever going to be with me until I lose at least 20 pounds," "My thighs are jiggly, gross and white - I can never wear shorts," and so on. She had something cruel to say about every single inch of her beautiful, perfect body.
A friend of hers had told her about us and the work we do and one day, post binge she had had enough and finally gave us a call. Today the thoughts she has are, "I love how much energy my body gives me," "I am proud to wear my new bikini," "I am grateful for my body exactly as it is."
Do you love and accept your gorgeous body exactly as it is?
Are you ready to look in the mirror and say, "Well look at you, aren't you looking wonderful today! I wouldn't change a thing about you"?
Today we are going to share with you a few of the powerful exercises we used with this beautiful client to get her to the place she would have never believed she could go!
How to Have a Healthy Body Image:
- Go in front of a mirror in a room alone and stare yourself in the eyes and say out loud, "I love you, [insert your name]." Say it over and over until you feel it as your truth in every cell of your body. This may take 100 repetitions, but each time after it will take less and less. It's going to feel strange at first and it might take you a while to get started, but we promise it's deeply healing and highly effective. It may even bring tears to the surface for you, but those are the most pure and beautiful tears you can shed. You are beautiful, you are complete and you are worthy of love just the way you are.
- Every morning, pick a part of your body to love on and write 5 things you love about that part of yourself. For example, "This morning I am going to love on my eyes. I love they're vibrant color, I love that they allow me to see the gorgeous sites that surround me every single moment of every single day, I love that my eyes are unique to me, I love that my eyes allow me to read, learn and discover any subject I choose to dive into and I love that they allow me to cry tears of joy, tears of love and tears of self-expression."
- Use a loving mantra. Pick an affirmation that is filled with love and plays your heart-strings. For instance, "I love and accept myself exactly as I am." Or "I am enough." Or "I am beautiful, I am worthy, I am complete." Pick a mantra of your own or adopt one of these examples. Write the mantra on every mirror in your house, on your hand, as the screensaver on your devices and say it to yourself throughout the day. Eventually this mantra will become second nature to you and genuinely feel like your truth.
