I am obsessed with coconut oil! And even obsessed may be an understatement. Every single day I'm lathering it on my body, combing it into my hair, swishing it in my mouth, and usually tossing it into my food. I would love to share with you why I use coconut oil as my one-stop shop for glowing results from the inside out.
Face lotion/ night cream/ make-up remover: coconut oil is naturally anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and an incredibly deep and long-lasting moisturizer. Coconut oil is the best body guard for your skin against dirt and toxins imaginable! This will reduce the number of blackheads and pimples that so frustratingly show up. Coconut oil also smooths out existing wrinkles and helps prevent new ones from forming. I choose to rarely use face makeup and throw some coconut oil on instead. But if you aren't ready for that commitment just yet, simply put some on before you hit the sheets at night.
Hair conditioner: if you are looking for an added shine, or want to reduce dandruff or itchy scalp this is the stuff for you! If I have time, I like to put it in my hair, rub it onto my scalp and let it sit for 20 minutes before showering. If time is limited, I'll just use it as my conditioner in the shower.
Oil pulling: What the heck is that?! Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that is believed to detoxify the body of harmful toxins and organisms. This can improve skin health, oral health, whitens teeth and the list goes on! It can't hurt, so why not give it a try? Simply put some oil in your mouth and swish it around. I like to do it for 10 to 20 minutes while I'm working on the computer. At the end of your 'pulling' make sure to discard the oil into the trash can as it will turn back into a solid at room temperature.
Cooking: this magical oil has a much higher melting and smoke point than olive oil. You can notice this difference by comparing the two oils at room temperature. The coconut oil will be solid, while the olive oil is liquid. So why does this matter? Well, when you heat an oil past it's smoke point, it actually causes damage to our body's cells and becomes carcinogenic (causes cancer). Aren’t you glad you don't have to worry about that anymore? Thank goodness for coconut oil!
Smoothies: when you consume unrefined coconut oil in it's raw form, you will see and feel so many benefits! This saturated fat will speed up your metabolism, help you lose weight, skyrocket your body's immunity, and help you focus. Not to mention it will keep your appetite under control. What's not to love? Throw two tablespoons into your next smoothie and see what you think. I promise, the flavor is delicious! Here is a recipe I love.
Where to buy it and what kind to get: Make sure to buy organic, unrefined (unmessed with) coconut oil. My personal favorite is Dr. Bronner. You can find it at your local health food store, whole foods, or online.
